Breakfast in bed… (and other bad habits) was a new collaborative installation by painter Mia Wilkinson and Kiki Cheung of Murder Cake, curated by Huma Kabakci and presented at Food Art Fair 2026 at Ladbroke Hall, London, on 5 and 6 September 2026.

The work staged the female appetite, both literal and erotic, across the two most charged sites of domestic life: the table and the bed. It asked where, and how freely, women are permitted to eat, desire and take up space.

Wilkinson’s paintings set the scene, situating bawdy, grotesque and playfully sexual figures within lurid domestic interiors that skewer inherited ideas of how women are meant to behave. Murder Cake’s sculptural jellies answered in edible form, trembling and sensuous, sitting somewhere between the cute and the gothic, so that the banquet itself became part of the artwork. Kabakci’s curatorial framing drew the two practices together through her ongoing research into food, conviviality and ritual as a social and anthropological language.

Rather than holding the feast at arm’s length, the installation invited visitors to eat from it, taking a portion from the table or the bed, so that consuming the work became part of experiencing it. Food appeared here as a cultural artefact and ritual, a way of talking about pleasure, shame, care and the labours of love that so often go unseen.

Across the weekend, a selection of Wilkinson’s paintings and hand-painted china plates, Kabakci’s publication Tender Touches, and Kiki’s jelly cakes were available alongside tasting experiences.
